Anyone that's seen my tank knows that I run a wierd shell substrate, not crushed shells, but tiny little bi-valve mullask shells. My DSB is 3+ inches.

I've ordered a larger tank and plan to transfer the substrate to the larger tank, which means that my DSB will be much more shallow, so I would like to add substrate to my tank.

Would it be ok to mix sand in with the large particle size of the shell? I've thought about going to lowe's and getting some plastic lighting grid, cut it to fit the 36"x18" footprint of the tank, then pouring live sand (thanks Ouling) into the grid, then perhaps 2x layers of screen (or not) and then adding my existing shell substrate. Or should I just dump it in together and hope for the best?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

The large particles will eventually end up on top of the sand, but the stated method will work great.
