MP40w ES-Making waves and risk to tank?

I would have to think it would have an effect on the life of an aquarium. How much? I don't know. I just tried to do a search to find a failure do to vortechs and didn't turn up much. I'm just sitting here thinking about when a wave hits you at the beach. Or the fact a tsunami is just a small wave before it hits the shore. On the other hand though, I think most of the quality aquarium manufacturers build pretty robust tanks that can take the beating. Only time will tell though.

Wow Tommy...that is an awsome wave. I could even hear the whirring of the pumps in that mode. Nice wave action.

Wave runs front to back in appearance, even though it is the left and right side Pumps that start it. The Nutrient Transport Mode is to suspend detritus in the water column for skimmer or prefilter removal, so the LR wave action is pushed forward by a back to front flow of water front the back mounted pumps. The pump setup is right out of the owner's manual. All pumps have differing ranges of % of power used in this mode as well. Pretty neat to observe.

I'll have to check that out. You may be the one that breaks my mental block of those devices. I think I could make a device to test or determine if there is any deflection of the tank walls if you want to try it.

Any time Dave.:)

I see people with them on Solana's. One of the reasons I got rid of mine was how then the glass was.

For anyone interested, here is a link with the MP40/10wES Owners Manual. Click on the Full Manual at the bottom of the page, as it has detailed explanations of the modes, along with graphic representations of the pump operation throughout the mode length.

Good point.

I would like to see the outcome of this! I am working on equipment list for the 180 build:D

Demonstration of the MP40W on my 60 cube (old setup) in reefcrest and short-pulse wave mode.

I can dial it and make a wave that will easily push water over the sides of the tank. The issue of tank stress is one, but perhaps more critical is the stress on the STAND. Most of them won't deal with the repeated oscillations of many many gallons of water.
