I have a 30 x 30 x 24 93 gallon cube. I currently have one mp40es and am thinking of adding a second one. The only thing is, with 2 pumps I don't like the alternating "hum" that they produce. Would 1 mp60 be overkill on a tank my size. It is a BB tank, so not concern about substrate.

hmmmm.. i would say its according to where you place the thing. the advantage would be a broader stream, which you wouldn't have to bump up to full power... I have recently caused issues with a few corals by literally blowing tissue off the skeleton with flow that was WAY too strong with one of my MP40s.

IF you go with only 1 pump, keep in mind that you won't be able to do an alternating flow. You could do a wave effect, but I'm still not sure how much good standing waves do in a captive reef.

2 40's gives you a much better random flow.

1 60 would have to be turned down a lot to not blast that side/section of the tank.

Also, new bearings for the wetside would help with noise if they're old.

an MP60 would be overkill... but then again.. OVERKILL is the AMERICAN WAY!!!
