Mushrooms splitting or dying??

Most of the polyp encroachment appears to be caused by the GSP. It typically grows on a pink "mat" that you can cut away and peel off with a razor blade and tweezers.

I would encourage you and everyone in the hobby to purchase "Aquarium Corals" by Eric Borneman. A close 2nd would be "Corals: A Quick Reference Guide" by Julian Sprung. The former has a lot more information but the latter has better pictures for flipping through.
Thank you! These are growing on a purpleish rubber mat and covering the rock. May try to cut and relocate for a fuzzy tank background

Yes. I agree.

And I would advise not messing with the zoas until you have more experience (palytoxin poisoning), and be cautious if removing the rock from the water to remove the gsp or leather. But these could all be removed relatively easily by breaking pieces off the rock.

Just be aware zoas and palys can squirt toxin a considerable distance, so wear eye protection if not also mouth and hand protection.
