im not sure what is causing this. i noticed that the water in my sump was looking lower than usual so i added ro because i thought this was from evaporation. i wasnt sure why it was so low so i checked the top and noticed the water level is higher than usual. the only explanation is that the pump is pumping more than is my overflow is sending down. i checked the overflow and there is nothing obstructing flow. the weird thing is that this just started today. (or only noticed today). anyone have any suggestions?

Algae in the overflow?

Any gurgling sound, like a toilet flushing? The overflow should not be at a full siphon, just gravity fed.

If you have an overflow box, check the position. Mine will rise up and the water will get to the edge of the tank, the plastic screw comes loose. :D

well i put a cloths hanger in it and it seems to go through it fine and i dont think my system has been running long enough for that. and when its coming down my water is at full flow. i was thinking that my pump is to strong for the tank's overflow but it was running fine since i bought it about a month ago.

Edit:

the tank is drilled.

well i found out that it was my horseshoe crab that was in the overflow. and i dont know how long he was in there but he didnt make it.

Horseshoe crabs tend to be "rental items" anyway (read: they don't fare well for very long in an aquarium).

Glad you figured out what the problem was before the tank really overflowed big :)

the tank almost did go over big. when i caught it it was over the rim that the glass top sits on

lucky you caught it when you did...

might be a good time to invest in a float switch and an Apex (you could program it to shut your return off if the water level gets that high again.. )
