My yellow tang is a jerk

So after the past week I've realized my yellow tang is a real a-hole. He constantly tail whips my hippo tang that is for some reason in love with him and follows him around the tank like a lost puppy. Last week I added a foxface and the yellow has been actively chasing him around the tank, cornering it and proceeding to tail whip the crap out of it. I think he has anger management issues. Anyone else have this problem?

Same thing here. I got a yellow tang free with a coral purchase, so I put him in my tank and he is harassing a new tang I just added to my 465, even though he is smaller. I pulled a big sailfin I thought would harass the new tang, and this yellow is an a-hole. I have a small PBT that is a jerk as well. Trying to catch them with a trap now.

My yellow has always been best buds with my hippo. Just added a Purple and I thought the yellow was going to kill it in the first 5 min. Turned the lights out and it let up a lot but not entirely. Now after almost 24 hours they seem to ignore each other for the most part. Hope it stays that way.

I guess I must have gotten lucky in fact the other day I was trying to think of what store I got my yellow tang from and it has completely slipped my mind. I am not sure if this agression is more towards similar fish or not but my tang follows my clowns around almost like hes guarding them but most of the day spends his time grazing the algae off the rocks. I have never seen him attack any of his tank mates. He was a little freaked about my cleaner shrimp when he was first added but now they act like friends too lol.

I have a little issue with mine, when I got them from the store and next day on my tank he was eating like no others, but after six months he went kind of shy and was hesitant to take any food I offer him, he would take a tinny amount of food then go ahead and hide, this behavior was for about two months and I noticed that he lost weight, but afterwards I saw him grassing on the glass. Finally he come back and star eating a little more.

I've read that tangs and angels should be the last fish added to your tank, and if more than one tang are to be added, it is best to add them at the same time. This way, they won't be territorial or feel like they run the tank. I guess it is hit or miss as it somewhat depends on the personality of the fish.

I had a sailfin and a kole tang that were in my tank before the crash. They were best friends until the sailfin had to spend a couple of weeks in a medicated tank. Upon re-adding him to the tank, he was an absolute a-hole to the kole tang...

If that purple tang catches a hard time in your tank, let me know. I'll relieve you of him as a favor. :shades:

During my yellow tang experience, I did a LOT of reading and they are not really as "simple/easy" as all the shops/websites make them out to be. They can have some extremely bizarre behavior issues. It's like they're all bi-polar and, well, a few fall off their medication.

They might have, but I'm trying to avoid shredded fins on this new tang...he is a Gem.

Finally got the yellow tang out, so he is not being harassed any more. He has a couple split fins from the experience, but is eating like a pig now. Couple pics.

Gorgeous fish! My yellow has calmed down alot. Now, almost 48 hours after adding the purple tang he is swimming where ever he pleases and the yellow tang ignores him except on a few occasions when she will show some aggression. I think they will soon be good buddies.

And just think, I was contimplating adding on to my tank... NOT NOW! I do have on big no no.. 2 blue regals, a vlamingi, and a naso all in 1 tank. Suprisingly enough, all get along great.

I use toenail clippers to clip off the caudal spikes on all my tangs before they go into the display. It keeps them from doing damage and while it may grow back....by that time they have slapped and slapped with no result so they usually just give it up. Problems then is they sometimes turn to biting but tend to do alot less damage that way. Hippos are the worst for turning to biting IME. But this method has allowed me to put some pretty big aholes together that now live in perfect harmony. It also allows a tang of smaller size to be placed with some that are larger without problems. Of course all of them are quarantined and beefed up before doing so.
