I have some in a shaded area, I believe there sponges.
+1 on sponges.
Shouldn't be harmful - and will come & go in density based on how much of whatever they happen to like is in your system at any given time.
I use pineapple sponge population as the guide to when I need to change water in one of my systems (it only has 1 fish in it, no coral or anything else, no cleanup crew). When I start seeing a bunch of the sponges on the glass - I do about a 1/3 water change and they go away for 3 or 4 months.

Filter feeders. I say yes to being beneficial.

I agree - they are using up something in your system and generally sponges are using up stuff you want gone.
Yes, they come in colors and different textures, I am in the process of getting rock out of my sump to add to the display so far I have found white(cotton), blue(rubbery) and yellow(rubbery/slick/2 rock stuck together with it).
