My wife just got a new job and she will no longer be there when the lights come on. I purchased a automatic feeder this weekend from the LFS and did a test run and it dumped out a lot of pellets and I turned it down to the 2nd lowest setting I can have it on. Who makes a good automatic feeder that I can rely on and not dump a crap load of food in my tank while I'm gone?

eheim 3581 is pretty good, I've used it on a daily basis on several tanks for around 3 years now. Holds a fair bit of food flake/pellets. Can adjust how much it drops, set up to 4 feedings a day at whatever time you like. Also there is an option for double feedings. My only complaint about it is the slider that is on the opening can get a little loose, I have a piece of velcro to hold it in place, works well enough. It easily holds enough food for when I go away for 2-3 weeks at a time. Around $25-30 in most places.

Another good feeder is the fishmate f14, it has 14 small bins in it, so it drops a set amount of food each time. Pretty good if you want to control exactly how much food is dropped at each feeding.

I have 3 Eheims for when I'm out of town and they work great. I usually set them up for when I'm gone for a month at a time. They hold plenty of food and I have not run out doing that period. This wouls vary depending on how much food is dumped per feeding.

Personally, I didn't like the Eheim unit. I didn't find it to be as reliable nor controllable as the Hydor unit. I run two Hydor's...one on my DT and one on my frag tank for the few fish in there. Easy to set, easy to control the dose. You can feed up to 3 times daily. They don't have a digital readout like the Eheim but hey....you aren't paying an Eheim price either.
