Need Candy Coral Info

Hi everyone,

I'm sorry I haven't been here in awhile but I haven't given up on my tank. I just bought a nice sized candy coral on Sunday, along with a black sea cucumber (that thing is the coolest!) and I have yet to see it open (bloom or whatever it is). I'm assuming it is alive because some of the polyps have white edges and some don't. The day after putting it in there it had this white/clear film/bubbles on some of the polyps. 2 days later it was gone. The pic I just took tonight. Any idea if something is wrong? Should I take it back? Or should I just be patient with it? It is in a 135ga tank, with 4 T5's, tested water and it is fine, temp is perfect and everything else is thriving.

I have a couple of candy canes in my system, so I have a little bit of experience with them... from the pic it looks like 3-4 of polyps have died, the ones with the white edges are still alive, but sunken in. Are the polyps opening up at all?

I added two candy canes from a buddy of mine who was breaking down his system, and it took about two weeks before mine really opened up. I hope this helps.

No they haven't opened up at all. I'm hoping they do, I was thinking I was getting a really good deal for the amount of good polyps.

Yes I did buy it from a sponsor store. I will call them in the morning to see about taking it back.

So I guess I bought it dead. I was told it was bloomed out the day before. I just figured it was closed up. I guess I should research candies more. At least my sea cucumber is happy. That sucker is all over the place and currently at the top of tank on the wall. I didn't realize he would climb the glass. LOL

What type fish do you have in the tank?

Fish that I have in the tank is Fiji Clown, Blenny scooter, clown goby, 2 damsels. I made sure it wasn't near any other coral. As soon as the store opens I'm gonna give them a call and see what options I have.

If that coral was open the day before you bought it dead, either somebody bamboozled you, or the store has a serious problem going on in their system. It doesn't look "freshly" dead.

At the very least whomever served you didn't know much about it - dead doesn't open up again. At some point when it was dying, there had to be tissue sloughing off of it like crazy.

The kicker is, those things are hard to kill. Only thing I've seen cause them to decline is another more aggressive coral too close (ie hammer coral - happened to me at home, years ago, but I only lost a few polyps) - once I figured out the problem, the rest of the polyps bounced back.

I just spoke to the store and they said to bring it back in. Not sure what went wrong. The person I spoke to said that they had gotten the piece from a customer and that it had been doing well at the store. So maybe we'll get an idea of what's wrong once I get it back to the store.

most deff. a dead skeleton I have a feeling whoever sold you that knew it was dead, I have never worked at a fish store nor am I an expert but most anybody that works at a LFS would know that thing is not alive......

Just wanted to let everyone know that I took the candy back to the store and they also said it was dead. I was refunded with no problem. Thanks for the help!!

If you ever see white (the calcium skeleton structure of the actual coral) if indication of the coral decay and if measures aren't taken the areas that haven't turned white will die as well.
