I noticed what I am pretty sure was ich on one of my gobies 3 weeks ago, so I moved all my fish to a hospital tank and started treating with hyposalinity. The visible ich parasites are no longer on the goby (i never saw any on the other fish) and I haven't seen any ich in about two weeks, until this morning I noticed some white spots on my flasher wrasse. This looks like it could be something else other than ich, but I am not an expert. I've had the salinity at 1.009 since the Oct 6th, so if this is ich, I am going to have to abandon hypo and try copper.

Can anyone help me with identifying these white spots?

Edit: Its also ironic that its on my flasher wrasse as well....[/QUOTE]

Thanks for the link! I'm hoping this is not ich as that would mean my current hypo treatment is not working against this specific strain!

It doesn't look like ich and may just be warts. If it starts looking fuzzy then I'd say fungal not viral.

Will it go away on its own once they fish are no longer being stressed by the hypo treatment? Is it contagious to other fish?

As James says it doesn't look like ich. If it is a fungus hypo salinity will not do anything for it.

Seems that Lymphocystis is the affliction of the week. Yep, I'd say that's what it is as well.

Fungus can happen, but it's rare in saltwater, at least in my experience. The salt actually inhibits fungus.

More typically, I see bacterial infections, parasites, or Lymphocystis, which is viral.

What the others said is right - once the stress subsides it will go away on its own.

Thanks Jenn! Is the fungus more likely to happen due to hyposalinity?

I don't think so. The hypo won't necessarily help the Lymphocystis either though.

The flasher wrasse is looking much better today! When I got home from work, my sharknose goby was riding around on the wrasse cleaning the spots. They are still visible, but look much improved.

And that's something that those "cleaner" type gobies do. Sometimes cleaner shrimp will pick them off too. That's good. Hopefully once they're gone, they'll stay gone.
