Need Help

I don't know if this is related, but it seems like a lot of people using Salinity recently have been having pH issues. It could be that you want to try a different brand.

His pH was fine. Everything I tested (did not test CA/MG) were fine. I don't think it's the water quality, unless there's something going on that we can't test for.

Toxins - usually the fish show symptoms first... that's why I asked about metals. Inverts (corals) suffer first - fish, later.

I was concerned about temperature but Perry bought a new thermometer and it was consistent with the one he had.

pH is more dependant on the CO2 concentration in your house then anything else. While various brands of salt in the past have had "bad batches", I would't worry about the mixed saltwater's pH.

Just throwing this out there... Do you smoke inside? Spray air freshener frequently? Maybe got some flea medicine from a dog or cat on your hands and then accidentally into the tank? All scenarios i have seen before.

phosphates & nitrates might be your answer......I don't recall what your ALK is though. I'm sure that is fine since you had that tested by Jenn.

There are only a few kits that can test phosphates in the low enough range meaningful for corals.......

I would add carbon, change out after 48 hours or so, then maybe every 7 after that. I would do twice a week water changes, then once a week, etc.....until all was well.

:D

almost every single time (almost) that someone was having issues, it was waster quality of some sort; not the furniture polish, not the cigar, not the copper pot pipe that fell in the tank, nor was it the boogie man.....just water quality, lighting, flow.....

Don't smoke in the house, haven't even taken the dog to the vet in over five years.

I'm doing another 20 gallon water change today and hopefully 15 gallon water change with used water out of Simon's tank tuesday of next week. Problem is I leave for vacation Wednesday through Sunday and I'm starting to freak out that when i get back things will be worse.

Looks like everything is recovering. After three 20 gallon water changes, running carbon and replacing it every 48 hours, and a Poly_filter(turned brown after a week) I'm starting to see the corals recover. Still not sure what the issue was but I'm leaning toward my girlfriend changing from the liquid soap in the cloth washer to Tide granular. When I changed out the filter sock after washing it (three times without soap) I noticed my skimmer over flowing right away.

Only thing that changed in the routine. I blame my girlfriend openly and she excepts all responsibility.

Then do your own mailto:#&@*%">#&@*%</a> laundry. :)

Seriously, glad things are improving. I have heard many good things about your tank and hated hearing of your recent problems.
