You don't need a canopy, there are T5 fixtures. And how often are you replacing your MH bulb? It should be every 8-12 months, so if you're getting longer life out of the T5's, it helps spread out the cost. How hot does your tank run with the halide? It may run cooler with T5's, especially units with active cooling.

My tank runs at 79 with my halide. I'll consider T-5's....
