The Iwaki that I have is supposed to be "silent", but it's pretty loud. Apparently the American version is louder & runs hotter than the Japanese versions (much like motorcycles!). So I'm looking to see what might be a quieter pump.

Need external pump, 3/4" MPT plumbing, ~500gph

I'm eyeing the Panworld 40PX but would like some opinions or suggestions.

What says ye?

If you won't to save sum money ecco pumps are quiet most 500+gph can be ran internal /external mine are quiet

I love my Bluelines. If you're ever in my neck of the woods, come by and hear (or not hear) for yourself.

Blueline = Panworld from what I see. Or am I missing something?

Same folks Panworld and Blueline. I have three external pumps in my sump room. A Blueline 55 (sometimes a 70) for my return, Reeflo Gold Dart on my Pro I, and a Reeflo Blowhole adjustable for my UV/Chiller feed. http://www.championlighting.com/product.php?productid=34520&cat=1515&page=1">This one</a>.

I can provide you a TV showroom like side by side comparison for you. Turn only one on at a time for you to hear each.
I'm actually impressed thus far with the Reeflo Blowhole. I won it at Creation in a raffle. Adjustable speed/watt and very quiet. I didn't think to mention it as an option for you. Might fit your needs very well.

Don't have a lot of experience with the ones mentioned so far but the Quiet One I have is extreamly quiet and little heat. Can be in sump or external.

Will see if maybe I can get out there this weekend if you're around.

Thanks for all the input everyone, I'm looking at everything mentioned.

Jeff, I am not far from Seth. If you do get up this way and want to see mine again let me know. I should be around all weekend.

Sounds good Rich! Thanks!

Not sure about that Rich. I think you are the same drive time from my house to yours as my house to Buckhead. I can make it to Taka Sushi on Pharr road in 35 minutes. Your in that part of Cumming I didn't even know existed!

Hey! I resemble that remark. I can make it to your house in 30 minutes easy. LOL From my prospective, that is right next door. Thats why I like it out here. :-)

I use Pan World pumps (about 5 different models), and have never considered them silent, but they are not loud, either. Space considerations have always forced me to use them at a 90 degree angle to the sumps they pull from when set up as a return pump, so that may be a source of minor cavitation, even though I upsize the elbows they pull through. They may be more quiet if they are pulling straight through a sump.

Eheim's are quiet for sure! I've got two and I never know if they're running. I have a 1250 sitting on the shelf due to it's struggling to push water to a reactor with 4' of head. I've always questioned them from a return pump aspect after that.

I may have a skewed perception of loud since I have a remote sump room. I'm not sitting on my couch listening to the pumps. Now, I do find my Vortech's to be loud. (Some people think they're quiet.)

So now I'm rethinking all of this.

I used this Iwaki pump because it was free and this mentality that large tanks have this type (looking) pump. However, thinking about it now, I don't know why I'm not considering a Marineland Maxijet. I've used the maxijet 1800 on the 60 cube for a couple years and it's virtually silent (never really heard it) and worked great. Thinking I could bump up to the 3000 and use it externally.

I'm not 100% sure how well it will perform in my setup with ~5' of head, and running through 1" plumbing that is T'd off to 2 returns that come out in the tank as 3/4" outlets including a total of 9 90's and 1 T.

That is one place that the Iwaki excels. It pushes water and doesn't care about my plumbing.

So is there any particular reason why the Panworld/Iwaki type designed pumps would be better than a bigger Maxijet/QuietOne/Eheim?

It's difficult to calculate because of my plumbing going from 3/4 at the pump, 1" at the whole run, then 3/4 at the exit, not to mention splitting that run into 2 outlets. Calculators put it between 8-10 feet.
