I've just come into a new 140gal reef ready tank and was looking for some input on skimmer and pump sizes for it. Tank has two corner overflow boxes. I was wondering wht size pump would i need to get in the sump and also suggestions on skimmer sizes and which brands have worked for others.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You usually want to look for a return pump that is about 3 - 5 times the turnover so in this case id suggest something close to about 1000 gph. And id rely on your powerheads for flow internally within the tank unless this is a closed loop system.

Yeah. I'm planning on eventually saving for a couple of mp40's but tht'll b dwn the road. Tryna keep the cost dwn as much as possible up front while still getting a quality pump n skimmer to rationalize the mp40's later lol.

Good deal on the new tank! I have a similar sized setup, and I wanted to provide you with some recommendations on equipment.

* Skimmer - I currently use a Super Reef Octopus 3000 Internal Skimmer in my 150 setup, and it has been awesome! I have had a couple of different setups and I have really liked the Reef Octopus line of skimmers. This piece of equipment is reliable, pulls out TONS of waste, and is cost efficient. If cost is not an option, then there are better pieces of equipment; however, for an upper-mid level Skimmer, I just don't think that you can beat an Octopus.

* Pump - If you are planning to use an in-sump pump on the same floor of your house, I would suggest a Mag 18 for a 150 tank. This is a low head, high GPH pump that should give you the turn over that you need!

Yeah i've been gettin alot of recommendations for reef octopus from some of my local friends. Other then Reef Octopus wht other brands would be a good alternative. ( just for comaprisons).

thanks for the pump info. I was guessing at least a 1200 gph pump n tht kinda confirms my ballpark guess was pretty close.

I agree with Jeff about Reef Octopus. They are awesome skimmers that do not break the bank. Until you upgrade to the MP40s, check out modded maxijets. They push some serious water and are very cost effective as well. Plus, they seem to work forever.
