New BioCube 29

i asume you put it in the middle chamber..make sure you keep the water level steady or get an auto topoff or the performance will vary and you might become frustrated with it

Same problem here and FWIW an Aquatic Life 115 skimmer didn't resolve the issue for me. I still get a bunch of "snow" floating around. I'm not sure if it's fine particles of sand or what.

I'll be getting a MJ1200 for my return soon and I'm hoping that forcing more water through filtration will do the trick. Also going to rearrange my returns to see if I can encourage stuff towards the overflow.

i will do what i can with the water level. i usually have about half a gallon left after my water change. dont want to go with an ATO. i do not like having extra equipment showing.

i took the stock filter out and just use filter floss. it seems to increase my flow. the filetr pad always got plugged and the water appeard to just be going around or over it. one time the water was spilling over the back wall instead of thru the overflow. without the filterpad, that has not happened so far. i rinse the filter floss everother day and it seems to work well.

i hope i have a different outcome with my skimmer than your experience.

having more direction toward the overflow is the key imo...i had a 425 koralia and a hydor flo rotator on the left hand side where the return comes out..with this setup no suspended particles on top...i recently added a 240 koralia on the right hand side of the tank on the glass that points toward the flow from the other 2...when i did this i began to notice more matter floating on the top...im going to adjust today and see if i can get a more circular flow going that doesnt hinder the flow toward the upper output...perhaps facing the 240 more downward

Edit: and i have the aquaticlife 115 as well with filter floss, chemipure elite and purigen in a media tank basket in the second chamber

First Coral... yeah... Bought a Hammer coral from ARC sponsor Imagine Ocean. My lights come on around 3pm. Will take picture when the lights are on and it has opened up. may not be until tomorrow.

You might check out nanoreef.com, they have great articles and I learned a lot there before setting up my bio 14. I did a few small mods/pulled out the carbon filter/sponge/bio balls (obviously) and replaced the stock pump for more flow. I set up chamber 2 as a small fuge..... Need to get some chaeto for it.

Congrats on the first coral. I expect to see you become addicted pretty soon. I like your rockwork too.

thanks for the replies.

i had to change my rock work some so i guld put the hammer in, now it is more horizontal than vertical. dont care for it as much and the fish dont care for it. i still may change the rock work again and try to stack it more vertical. the hammer has been opening really well. there are 10 heads when closed up at night and it is just about a 5 inch long oval when they open. from the top you cannot see individual heads. the color has been getting greener i think. i am really happy with the hammer coral.

Started having ALOT of trouble with my return pump. when i shut if off to do the water change, it would not turn back on. i would have to try to get my hand in there and jiggle the pump to make it start. several times the pump would come off the elbo that leads to the tank, thus spraying water everywhere. i have soaked the pump in vinegar and scrubbed a couple of times without it helping. the pump was getting louder as time went on. i dreaded doing my water changes thinking of the trouble i was going to have. i was swearing everyother week when it was time to change the water. it was to the point saturday that either i was getting a new pump or chucking the tank. went to Imagine and bought a maxijet mj1200. footprint was correct for back of biocube. it is rated for 50 gallons per hour more than the original biocube pump. more flow is better in my opinion. now the tank is quieter and when i plugged the pump in it started. yeah.

Ive just cycled my 29 and love it.Refuge with home made fiter floss as well as perguin in second chamber.6 Hermits small black pair of clowns.I put in a rock with some palys and zoas doing well.Duncan was next doing well this week.I put in 2 sps frags last night and hope there good when I get home Thursday.

sprinklerman, sounds good. i have phosguard, purigen and carbon in my middle chamber. i change them out monthly. i have reusable bags , so i just dump the old and pour new from a bottle. i have my heater in the first chamber. knocked out the false floor to make the heater fit. i like the simplicty of the biocube 29
