I've been wanting one these ever since I got into marine tanks. I picked him (or her?) up yesterday at Creation Reef. I wanted the fish to be visible, so I tried to give him a spot to burrow in right away. I took a few barnacles and dremmeled them out a little to make room for a 4 inch piece of PVC. I did one 3/4" and one 1".

I had intentions of placing him as close to that spot as I could, but he had different ideas! He jumped out of the net as soon as it hit the water and hid in the back rock. Luckily, I don't have much in there right now to scare him, so he soon came out!

Of course, after the time and effort spent making him some housing options, he decides he'll just move things around and make his own spot. At least he's utilizing one of the things I made for him!

he is a beauty.....and not cheap either...if he is the one i am thinking of at creation..

He is! That's by far the best price I've ever found on one! I got an email from them and minutes later was on the phone with my CC! :) A word to the wise, I recently learned these guys prefer cooler tanks. I run around 78-79 all the time, so I'm hoping he likes it in his new digs.

Why the PVC in the barnacle? Fish like this will usually use the barnacle au naturel, without you needing to do anything to it.

The Barnacle alone wont be deep enough unlees they have a DSB. Unfortunately Bluespots tend to make multiple burrows in home systems untill they are completly comfortable.

Make syer you keep lots of LR rubble around for him to use. When I had my Blue Spot Jawfish. I had to break up base rock every week so he could keep his projects going.

I was trying to give him a place to go right away so he wouldn't head to the back of the tank. Turns out he made his own setup anyway, but used the barnacle I put there for him.

One thing I can tell you about these guys is they are always working. I set him up on the left side of my tank away fro the clowns and unfortunately near my Vortech. He's always spitting up sand just high enough to get kicked into the Vortech flow. I will have to remedy that since he's blowing sand all over the tank! :boo:

Also a good point. I have around 3" in that spot and the PVC went kind of parallel more than it did go deep. He actually burrowed under it and moved the piece around so he has a front door and a back door!

I have several small pieces of base rock around him now, but I won't be surprised if I have to add more. The funniest thing was watching him grab a snail to use, only to have the snail wander off!:D

If you don't mind me asking, what happened to yours?

Ah, guess I'm just used to seeing smaller ones (maybe juveniles?), where they just kinda curl up inside.

He's a good 3.5-4" now!

He Jumped out 2 days before I was gonna to make a mesh top. My favorite fish ever, I plan to get another one in july or Aug. Mine used a Kenya tree frag for part of his burrow. If you check my old build thread in the Nano Section there is a few nice pics of him.

i made a barnacle+pvc condo for my bsjf but he ignored it and continued digging the tank up so I let him do it. One week I did a lot of rescaping and he got disoriented; he'd swim around listless, and wouldn't build a burrow. Next thing I new, he jumped! 4 minutes on the ground as i tried frantically to find him, but I got him back in, the cleaner shrimp groomed him, and he's back to normal. Luckily i was there to see it happen and avoid a pretty pricey loss. I think mesh tops are for unhappy fish.

Happy or not these fish will go carpet surfing. And it will be when you are not around. A good tight lid, whether it be glass or mesh, is essential.

I urge anyone with a Blue Spot Jawfish to get a top, I was a nay sayer a first because I had a nice rimless tank. But after he jumped I was PO'ed.

Get a top= Protect your investment:yes:

Any updates on this little fella, how's he doing? I bought mine around the same time and unfortunately he didn't make it. Lasted about 6 weeks and then he got ick after cleaning the tank and never made it passed that!

I lost him when my heater went rogue and the tank hit 95 degrees! I don't think I'll get another one, either. I LOVE them, but my tank doesn't stay cool enough, I don't think.
