look into UPB control for your devices. It is a powerline carrier like X10 without the reliability issues. It uses a "network" setup and packet data to deliver commands. Best of all, you connect through a serial port on your computer and a pim(powerline interface module) to put the data on the powergrid.

I have looked in a variety of controllers, but still want something cheap and easy. A USB power switch is just that.
