Just picked up my first DSLR yesterday (Canon XSi and added a 100mm Canon Macro lens). I've always used point and shoots, so have had a crash course in photography/Macro photography the last 2 days.

I would love some criticial photography feedback.

Oh - and look what I found on my purple tip (third picture).

I spotted that too, only it looks to me like he's displaying "the bird," possibly even "the flock."

Thanks for the comments. None of the pics have been post processed other than cropping, so I imagine even the Auto color/contrast type steps would be beneficial. I already want a new $800 lens...

Looks like I have some Interceptor in my future.

Here are a few more.

Okay--you've convinced me. It's time to buy a macro lens! "But dear--it's necessary for the health of the corals....we need to see if we have red bugs!"

Nice pics!

FYI, there is a Photo of the Month contest going on right now, and the subject is "fish".

So take some shots of your fish, and enter the best one in the contest.

Thanks guys.

Bryan - fish are very difficult for me to shoot now because I don't have a flash(s) yet. I can only get that sand sifter cause he sits still at the front of the glass. I'll give it a shot though...

greenhut, yes, fish are much harder. This is what I do:

-Increase the iso to where I can get shots at at least 1/40 sec.

-Change the metering mode to spot, to where it focuses and meters on the dot in the middle of the frame.

-Don't try to fill the entire frame with the fish- you can always crop a bit.

-Take lots of pics- that's the beauty of digital!

Good luck!

Are you using a DSLR? which one?

I understand the nenefit of changing the 9 point auto focus to 1 (or focus manually), but what benefit do you get from spot metering over the default TTL evaluative mode?

Do you do anything to compensate for the high color temp of most reef lighting?

I've red that multiple flashed are the secret to good fish photography...
