I just joined the club!

I only have a little experience with reef tanks, but now I am jumping in with both feet. I joined because of the dual benefit of discounts and (more importantly) to meet locals who may be able to give me advice on my soon to be numerous mistakes.

I am in the process of setting up a 55 gallon planted reef tank. I have about 30-40 pounds of dry base rock coming in at Imagine Ocean Wednesday. I plan to pic up a chunk of LR and maybe some sand at each LFS around here.

I am doing the tank as cheaply as possible. I know it isn't a cheap hobby, but no reason not to be frugal! The tank, stand, a Millenium 3K filter, and heater were free. I bought 100 pounds of dolomite and 100 pounds of pulverized limestone for the DSB. And some polishing filter pads for the clouds lol.

I just bought some 4X55 pc lights from ebay. Not what I really want. But the meaner half says that if I stick with this hobby for 6months, I can blow 1k. So i went cheap because I am gonna replace them by the time the bulbs wear out. I am also planning on getting a det kit from IPSF, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. But I really love watching the microfauna. Do any of you fellows trade stuff like that? I'd be happy to pay for a cup "o" bristle worms!

Any advice on mistakes I may be making?

Also..since I entered my info on the signup page, I just need to wait for my card right? I plan on buying the majority of my stuff soon, too bad I won't have my card for it .

Welcome, a print out of your PayPal receipt should be enough to get your discount at local stores.

Welcome to ARC! You're already doing great by dealing with Jenn at Imagine Ocean. The rest of the sponsors and members are great too. I still can't believe how friendly and helpful everyone is. :)

You will find a lot of knowledgeable folks here with lots of great ideas on how and how not to do things!! again, welcome to the club and happy reefing!!

I'll take you up on that. I didn't even know your place existed. I'll check it out this weekend. Thanks for the warm welcome, guys.

Actually, the next meeting is about 1.5 miles from my house. Lucky me. I think I'll drop by to check it out. Do you guys trade frags and stuff, or will it just be learning about photography?

And I will definitely bring beer if it is allowed. Or a margarita next door.

You will dig the planted reef. Just takes a little pruning, but your tank gets an extra shot in the arm along the lines of battling waste. Welcome and good luck.

Good luck with your set-up. I'm in Woodstock and would be glad to visit with you and talk saltwater with you any time.

Glad to see that. I always read abouy how much money you need to have to do this hobby right. I think I have about 300 dollars in this setup and all my bases are covered, except for testing supplies.

I am very happy with the DSB. 11 bucks for 2 bags of pool sand and 6 more for 2 bags of pulverized limestone. Passed the vinegar test with flying colors. What is even better is now that the tank has almost cleared up I can see that it is composted of crushed shell fragments. This stuff is like super cheap aragonite.

I'll take you up on that offer, barbara. Are you coming to the meeting?

Welcome !!!
Read as much as you can and don't be afraid to ask questions. Most of us will try to answer the best we can. Each of us doesn't know everything but collectively (including some sponsors) one of us usually knows the answer. As far as trading the answer is a definite yes. See you at the meeting.

Good deal. If any of you fellows are heading to the meeting and have extra detrivore/ls/rubble/algae that can add diversity to a new tank, I will buy each and everyone of you a beer for a ziplock bag of gunk! Those little guys are the real reason I love this hobby. Fish and corals are just there so my visitors don't think I am nuts.

Hey Dregs, if you make it out to Keen Reef Saturday night I'll have some frags for you.

I'll be there! Just as soon as I figure out where it is.

Wow. That's a bit of a drive. What is going on there Saturday? I think I can make it.

Haha, monthly poker game. I'm driving from Alabama like I do once in a while. Plus Tim has good prices, and some frags for around $5.

Cool, I'll drop by then. Don't know if I can play poker. Actually I know I can't play poker. I get beat by 8 year olds.
