Did anyone ever investigate the usage of car bulbs for reef lighting?

They're fairly inexpensive - run on 12 volts and should come in all different color spectrums.
Connecting them to high beam should produce a fairly homegenic pattern.

there's a couple of tanks over on nano-reef.com that use the 35w HID headlamps. with the build cost though, you're better off getting a 70w HQI or even just doing some research on LED's (evilc66 over there is an LED guru) and building a DIY LED pendant.
