I was looking at this, will def. be giving it a shot for a frag tank this summer

For the cost, PAR numbers don't seem that great. Seems a simple T5 fixture would have better results. It's cool, but just doesn't seem like it's worth the trouble.

but for a small frag tank? seems brilliant.. you could build a light that costs nothing to run for around $100 that gives you great par at 6" depth that will sustain any coral

I could see it being useful on a 3-5 gallon pico where you could put maybe 12 LEDs in one little area, but for a big tank it seems like you'd need more than what that guy used to get decent numbers.

I think the main benefit for the frag tank would be the lack of heat in shallow water.

Whats crazy with the LED and that Reefkeeping would print a DIY is that tech. it is a patent infringement with Orbitech and their LED monopoly..

Q.
What effect do patents have on DIYers? Do I infringe if I make a patented product at home?

A.
This is another area I’ve seen much misinformation. Many comments have been made to the effect that, assuming a Solaris unit infringes the Orbitec patent, you could make a DIY Solaris at home or buy/sell a DIY kit of parts. These assumptions, however, are incorrect.
As for building a patented product yourself, the patent laws prohibit making</em>, using</em>, and selling a patented invention. So if you build a patented LED light in your basement, you infringe because you made the patented invention. In fact, you technically infringe for even using an infringing product that you purchased, regardless of how reputable the company manufacturing or selling the product might be.

yeah... there is more to the Q and A but my copy and paste isnt wanting to work.. so here is where I found that at..

I'd like to try this for adding shimmer accent lights to my T5 fixture. I've experimented with some LEDs you can buy at the HD and you get SOME shimmer. I can imagine with a higher quality, brighter LED you could achieve the desired effect of MH shimmer on a T5 tank!!

thatll get the job done, maximum light from a single point source.[/QUOTE]

Now if I only knew how to design the right "fixture" I'd be in business! :) I'll do some research to see if I can set something up. Of course, I welcome any opinions and/or experience as well!

I am really tempted to try it. I think a few more leds, and some 45 degree optics would to the trick. I am very very tempted to make one. I found a person on ebay selling the white ones for like $4 for 5 of them. They don't have the royal blues though, only blues which are not the right spectrum.

I think I might make one for my nano, and see how it does, and then build one for the 90 if all goes well.

You got a link to this seller?

It seems that its only every once in a while that he sells them that cheap. Still decent pricing though. That link was active when I looked earlier

Hmm, I thought they were the CREE's, guess not. They look like them.

I am looking into doing all LED, but I am worried about killing my clams.

from what i've read, the rebel LED's are supposed to put out 3x the par. but they also cost 5x as much per bulb, $35 vs $7. with that cost, you might as well do halides. 2x120 mm fans will keep your heater running even with 2x250w halides.

I'm just looking to add shimmer to my T5 setup. I just can't figure out how to put it all together. I don't have a hood. Anyone have suggestions?

I don't think would be "point specific" enough. What I think I need is like 4 clusters of 4 bulbs each. I just don't know where I would mount them.
