New in reefkeeping magazine...DIY LED' THREAD

I am designing a small 24 LED unit for my 30g cube and should have the plans finalized to start ordering stuff in mid May if anyone wants to order from http://www.ledsupply.com">www.ledsupply.com</a> [IMG]http://www.mpja.com">www.mpja.com</a> or [IMG]http://www.heatsinkusa.com">www.heatsinkusa.com</a> then we can do a group order and split shipping.
I would be down for 3 whites, 3 royal blues, a buckpak, heat sink, and a powersupply. I am gonna make one for my nano, and see how it does. Problem is I dont have a canopy for it, and its a bow front, so I will need to make it look nice...

rostato,

I'm in a similar position. These things don't put our much heat though, right? I wonder if I could just lay them on top of my birdnetting cover. Or maybe hang them underneath the cover using zip ties, or something. I have a good 3 inches of clearance before the top of the water.

no they get hot! They run probably around 120+ degrees...hence the need for a heatsink, and computer fan.

Well crap in my lunchbox why don't ya!! :) Back to the drawing board, I suppose. Has anyone ever used one of those Current PowerBrite fixtures?

I had two, and they are not bright at all. They also have optics that make them more of a point source, so you need A LOT of them to light a tank. Two on my 12G looked like ugly moonlights. I sold them.

Ah, but see I am looking for them to be point source! Remember, I am looking to add a shimmer effect to my T5 setup. Do you think they would work for that purpose?

Not unless you get a lot. I tried 2 on my old stock 36" nova extreme fixture, and you couldn't even see them. I really wanted to add the effect, but decided it wasn't worth it at all.

They must really suck then. I took some under the cabinet lights from Home Depot and was able to get SOME shimmer from just one of them. If those same fixtures you had used the CREE lights, think that would have worked?

probably. If I were you I would get 6 of the CREE's and run them off of some U tubing as a long heatsink the lenght of your tank. I bet 6 would get you some shimmer.

FIFY!!

Seriously, that does sound like a good idea, but I would need a little guidance. I'm not a complete electrical idiot, but I play one on occasion.

LOL! Your a funny guy. I am not electrical expert or anything, but I believe that with enough research I can make almost anything work.

It would be about the same thing as what I want to make for my nano, just spread out over the wodth of your tank instead of clustered all together on a heat sink like I wanna do.

Well, let's get it together, try some new beers and see how bad we can screw things up!

Charlie, YOUR THE MAN! AWESOME! I am gonna order one of the retros and see how it does, and learn the technology a little better...

YEah I am hoping its big enough for a 12G eclipse. But over 100 par is perfect for what I have in there. All I have is a 40W PC retro now.
