I have a mag 9.5 that's starting to give me troubles on the restart this weekend. Went to LFS to try to get replacement and he tried to rape me at 179.00 for a mag 7. Needless to say I told him no way I could order one for 75.00. He said he has overhead , no he has a bunch of old crap on his shelves because he is WAY overpriced. Anyway I got the old one working but need to order a replacement. I am learning they aren't the best pumps out there. What would suggestions be from people with years of experience in what brand to replace this old 9.5 with. Thanks

Eheim 1260 then mod it to a 1262. Quiet, built to last and parts are easy to find if needed.

I love my Eheim 1262, luckily I grabbed mine when PetSmart.com had a pricing error on them. I've heard the Eheim compact series is very good too. I guess it also depends on your budget.

I'm using a mag pump for my build... But I reeeeeaaaallly really want a DC pump!!!!!!

I recently picked up the new CoralVue DC Pump (RODC 5500). I have not got it plumbed up to anything yet, so cannot state on its performance or reliability. What I can say is that it seems much better built than Jebao, which doesn't seem to be all that bad of a pump either.

Isn't that a skimmer pump with a pin wheel??

They can be used as a skimmer pump, but is sold as just a pump. Any DC pump can be used with a skimmer with the right volute and pin wheel.

Im pretty sure I've made up my mind on the Jebao DC 6000. I really like the idea of variable speed and feed mode. Amazon at 104.00 seems the best price. Looked a RB and they were about 40-50 bucks more

Sorry grant my DA looked at the wrong one on their website. Thanks for the link. Looks like a very nice pump but maybe a little more than I want to spend. Has the reliabilty been good on the Jebao pump. Every review I read seems to be positive and it's like 1/2 the price.

They seem to do well, but I have read about them giving out after around a years worth of use.

I think there are some other members that have been running them for around a year. Maybe they can speak up about reliability.

There are also a couple threads on Reef Central you might browse through. The first generation of DC pumps, just like any other technology, has had it's up and downs.

There is just not a lot of info about long term reliability with DC pumps yet. They are too new. Early adopters will find out for you, but if you want solid reliability, go for the Eheim.

One thing I can tell you about DC pumps is that the lower priced asian models come with only about six speed positions. I have a Red Dragon RD3 Speedy 50 watt DC pump on my SM300 skimmer, and I can vary flow in about 1/2 watt intervals all the way up to 100%, which gives about 75 different flow rates for the pump with the supplied controller. This is probably a function of the price point and brand of the pump, and that it is German engineered and manufactured.

Red Dragon DC pumps can be purchased for return pumps, so that type of adjustability can be had, if you want it and are willing to pay for it. My guess is they would be durable as well.
