Hello,

So I have acquired a new tank and have never had a sump before. I have a lot..... of equipment, but no return pump yet. The tank is an Oceanice 120 Tech tank with 2) 1.5 drains, and 2) 1.0 returns with a 40 breeder for a sump. What pump(s) would be best for the return? run internally? OR could I drill the 40 breeder and run external? Everything needs to be under the stand.

Also I have a list of things I want/need to do before getting the tank wet, please feel free to add to or suggest.
1) Leak test tank on Patio
2) Waterproof inside of stand
3) Buy return(s), skimmer (I have something in mind BM- NAC-7, but open to your better cheaper cone skimmer)
4)Plumb
5) Filler up
6) Empty wallet at LFS

Side note, anyone enjoy helping setup tanks? Beer provided. Frag. Cash if needed. LMK via PM please.

Thanks all in advance, build thread to come.

You can't go wrong with an Eheim 1260 or 1262 for your return. They can be run internally or externally.

I wouldn't mind coming by and helping, I'm pretty good with setups of all types!

Be sure your patio is very flat and level if you leak test it there... if not it can stress the seams, and either fail or contribute to a failure later.

I have heard/seen nothing but good things about them.
Do you think with about 5-6 feet of head pressure, they would be sufficient for 150 system? 1262 specifically?

Stoney,

You are more than welcome and it would be appreciated, as soon as I lock down a plumbing date/weekend. I will PM you. Pic a tank yet?

Barry,

That was a concern of mine as well. Would a sheet of plywood suffice? Or am I going to have to test elsewhere? Also the patio is fairly flat by the way, just the coarse surface generally speaking associated with concrete. If not one sheet of plywood, what would you do considering my constraints?

Geoff,
LMK, man if/when you might have a minute. I don't want to deprive you of your few days a week with your tank, but you are always welcome. I probably owe you a couple brews for picking up things for me in the past,, thanks man.

General Questions:

1) Return Pump: If it were you would you run internal or external?
1 return pump or two?

2) How much would putting a Y into the plumbing take away from the GPH approx?

I would personally run external. I have on all of my larger tanks. And if you were to put in a Y into the return plumbing it would cut the GPH in half by the overall amount to each line.

Excellent. That was what I thought to be true, but was unsure if it was that easy of a calculation. Following up with text.

I'm also going to setup a new tank also (once I find one and buy it though), and I have never plumbed a tank too. Hopefully I'll learn a thing or 2 from this thread.
