I do believe LFS staff have good intent... it might have came out wrong in my original post.

What kind of filtration do you have on your system?

I have a rena xp2 canister filter and a dual bak-pak skimmer but I'm not sure if I like it.

Jenn, I know you've been at this a lot longer than me...but I've had several people tell me NOT to agitate the sand bed with vacuuming. Once I stopped doing it, I no longer had any problems. Thoughts?
 
Generally, those that vacuum only keep a minimal sandbed that is more for looks than filtration, so its muuuuuch shallower. You need to do it on a fairly regular basis if you're going to do it at all because you'll be stirring everything up.
