Hello Reef People, I purchase a Melanurus Wrasse from my LFS on Saturday morning and dripped him into my 125 gallon Reef Tank with Crushed Coral Substrate. He went in the rock and I have not seen him since. Not even at feeding time and I understand that they have BIG appetites. Should I be concerned or is this normal behavior for a Melanurus Wrasse?
Thansks for the feedback,

Scott

normal behavior for fine sand as they bury at night and when frightened.......crushed coral will sclice him up, however..

Several people told me not to use CC after I bought him, but others said that they have CC and a wrasse that is doing fine. Also, my LFS said it was fine to have CC. My biggest concern for now is that I have not seen him in a couple of days so I assume that he is not eating and may become sick. Has anyone out there brought home a Melanurus and not seen him for several days after introducing him to a new tank?
Thanks again,

Scott

I've answered your question, sorry you have had bad advice.......CC is horrendous for Wrasses......Should I answer it differently? confused.

They DIVE into the sand at night.......diving into sharp crushed coral?

As I advised, you should have replaced some of the CC with sand. Having said that, I have a radiant wrasse that I did not see at all for the first 4-5 days. He finally came out and I noticed he has a swim bladder issue. Over the next week, he was out 2-3 hours in the morning and then went back into the sand (presumably to heal). Over the last week, he's been out almost all day and the swim bladder seems to be healed. Anyhow, it's not too uncommon for them to disappear for a few days, IMO.
