Hi Everyone,

I started a 90g tank about 7 weeks ago, and about 3 days ago I got what looks to be brown algae. Any suggestions on getting rid of it??

Thanks!

Welcome!
Looks like a diatom bloom. Common with the cycle of a new tank. If you have been testing our water, you should be close to if not finished with your cycle. If you don't know what I am talking about, you should read this: http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43292">http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43292</a>

Generally, diatom blooms will go away. Most people add clean up crew(snails, hermits, etc) at this point.

Welcome! Yep, just a part of the cycle. Patience will get you a long ways in this hobby. If/when you add a clean up crew, put in a small one. Some people would have you believe you need about 300 snails/crabs in your 90 gallon. I'm not sure you even need 30!

Diatoms are just consuming all of the excess silcates in your tank. They will have done their job in a few days and start to die off. If you have a skimmer (and you should) it will start to go in overdrive soon. I would look to start your clean up crew at this point. Maybe something like 6 astrea snails, 6 cerith snails and 6 nassarius snails.

Welcome to ARC!

Thanks for the info! Looks like I am going to go adopt a clean up crew! I appreciate the help.
