nitrate help

yeah right after i posted that I read something were levels of nitrates were found in water, you will diff. get phosphates though. I don't think he is getting the problem from the tap water though, his tank seems to not be going through the nitrogen cycle. I wonder if he has any bio-balls:yuk:, or a sponge the has not been cleaned. I also wonder when the last time he cleaned the canister. On e damsel is just not enough bio load to cause a significant nitrate levels to appear.

Think any chemicals in the water could be killing off the bacteria or slowly poisoning the fish?
