I'm thinking of getting the nuvo nano 16, then upgrading the lighting with either 1 or 2 more of the stock lights or a 12" 16 watt wave point super blue LED, and just put this in the middle of the stock lights (both stock lights are about 4" in diameter and are 8 watts and the tank itself is 24" long so I'll have about 20" of light and 32 watts). does anybody have any experience with this tank? positive/negative? should I go with another tank like this? would I be able to grow most corals with that lighting?

I have had the exact same set up for 2 months now. The tank has been great but the lights are not worth it. Buy the tank without the lights and put that money towards a better light fixture.

I really like my Nuvo 24. Got the Current Orbit Marine LED fixture, they work great for these shallow setups (i.e. Nano 16 & 24). Has all the bells and whistles (i.e. ramp timer, storm, and cloud coverage effects, etc...) Good color too.

I'm buying the setup off of Craigslist for $200 and it comes with the tank, the 2 stock lights, the skimmer, heater, spin stream nozzles, and an extra light- a rapidled par 38. my plan was to keep the skimmer, nozzles, and stock lights then try and sell the tank with the other light for around $100-$150, then buy either the 24 (doesn't come with lights) and use the stock lighting in addition to some extra lights I can buy, or get the 16 and use 3-4 of the stock lights.

I'll check out the orbit lights.

did you use the 24"-36" fixture that is 23 watts or the 36"-48" fixture that is 36 watts? what kind of corals have you been able to grow under it?

I used the 36"-48" fixture. Supports everything I have thrown at it (i.e. Monti's, Zoas, Palys, Leathers, Acans, Mushrooms, Frogspawn, Hammers, Candy Cane, Maxi Mini, & Favia).

interesting. that light sounds pretty appealing now, and if I were getting that anyways I think the 24 may be the way to go. I still think I'll buy the other tank just to take the spin streams and the skimmer. save myself some money not dishing out $150 for those and then as long as I can get at least $50 for the tank, heater, and lights I'll be in good shape. only problem is I already have a stand for a 29 gallon so it wouldn't be big enough for the 24. maybe try selling it also? need used it but it's too late to return it.

I think I'm just going to buy the tank and as long as it's in good shape I'll use it, buy the orbit lighting for on top of the 16 then be good to go. so this tank is good? and recommended?

I have a 16, it's a beautiful tank with only a few flaws--the stock pump is weak, the water line is a good inch 1/2 below the top of the glass which is annoying, and the media baskets are worthless. I bought it without the stock lighting and have T5s--from what I've heard the stock LEDs are pretty bad

ok so I have the tank and I'm really liking it. I got water in yesterday with the live sand and some already cured dry rock. I upgraded the return pump from the 211 GPH, to 2 mini jet 606 pumps that do 153 GPH. I did this to get a about 3/2 the original flow, and also so I could put the skimmer in the middle section lol. I'm going to turn one of the two middle sections (next to the main middle sections) into a refugium using the inTank fuge basket, and the other one has my heater in it. I bought the 2 custom caddy media baskets and I have the sponges like this: in the left side I have it from top to bottom: mechanical sponge, floss, carbon sponge, 2 phosphate sponges. and in the right side: 2 mechanical sponges, 2 carbon sponges, phosphate sponge. and then I plan on putting a bag full of matrix (or two), a bag of purigen, and a bag of phosguard in the chamber with the heater most likely, or maybe the return section. how does this sound? missing anything?

decided to sell the skimmer, so I'm now looking for a 3rd stock light to upgrade the lighting a little. found two of the 8 gallon nuvo sets on eBay for pretty cheap so I'll see if I can win one of them pretty cheap to just take the light out of it and then maybe just leave the tank lying around maybe if I ever want to use it. but anyways, here's some pics!

fuge basket (no algae yet):
kind of blurry but it's just rocks. I did a little DIY on the intank fuge basket. I took a piece of plexiglass and fully sealed one side of it and then put up a side on the top to sort of make a basket for more rock and then half sealed the middle compartment to ensure the algae won't slip out.

that's all I have for now :)

just got a pretty good deal on eBay for the 8 gallon nuvo. I got it for $80 with free shipping, so cheaper than I could've even gotten the light alone for which is what I wanted. so I'm going to take the light out of the kit and upgrade my nuvo 16 to 3 light units now. then I'll either sell the 8 gallon tank or just leave it laying around for if I ever want to use it :)

third light came in.

did some basic tests yesterday about 2 weeks into the cycle.

ammonia: 0.1 ppm
nitrite: off the charts
nitrate: about 30 ppm

so not too bad for 2 weeks in
