Anyone know if any of our sponsors carry Oceanic salt? I used it in my last tank and was really pleased with it. I have been using IO Reef Crystals and was wanting to make a change. Was going to try Salinity but I don't know if I can drop 90 bucks on a bucket of salt.

Thought I might try the Oceanic salt again

I think Seachem is missing the boat by only offering Salinity in large quantities..... Smaller, more expensive quantities seems like it would be as profitable

Just seemed that the other tank did better. This one has WAY better skimming, lighting, water movement, etc. Figured I'd try something different and compare the results

Is it basically geared towards the same type of corals? What other supplements do you add? Size of tanks that you are comparing? Fish load? Lighting difference?

I guess what I am getting at is that there are a lot of variables. The salt may be what needs to change, but it may not be.

My friend told me of his theory on different brands of salts. It kind of makes sense: he basically says "that different manufactures produce salt to go along with their specific product lines: red sea, aqua vitro, Kent, etc. People who use salinity and all the other components of their product line have great luck. When you take a tank that has been using instant ocean and BRS 2part and throw salinity or the red sea coral pro into the mix, you might be asking for trouble.

A lot of the high end salts are made to be used with that same brands product line. Mix and matching can lead to ionic imbalances."

Interesting theory.

I used it when I had a fish only tank and it was fine. When I went to reef tank I switched to Seachem Reef. It was testing low on CA and Alk and I had to dose a lot to keep the levels up. I don't know if any sponsors carry it but when I was using it I got it at Petco.

So you had better levels from seachem reef?

The last time I checked a batch of Seachem Reef I got 1290 to 1300 mag, 9 to 10 dkh on Alk and 420 to 440 on CA mixed at 35ppt. That was a couple buckets ago and to be honest I don't check every batch I mix up.

It's been so long (4 to 5 years) since I used Oceanic that I don't remember the levels. I just remember them being low enough that it prompted me to change brands when I started adding coral.

That's pretty good levels on the seachem reef! Maybe I'll try that next. I hear that the reef salt is outsourced and manufactured in the same facility as IO. I am not saying that it is the same salt, but I would be more likely to buy seachem reef than Salinity. Seachem reef buckets come with a metal handle, salinity comes with a plastic handle. Plastic handles have a tendency to break when you are carrying 5gallons of dirty salt water. And I like instant ocean.

Thank and I use IO. The levels we get are similar with the exception of alk being low. Save us money
