octopus in a reef tank?

Those guys are very smart and will start damaging things very soon if it gets big enough....I think enough ppl have said that already. imagine one big enough to pick up a rock and thrash it around possibly breakign the tank, that would suck..

I have a 3/4" thick acrylic tank with 1" thick on the bottom so I'm not too afraid of it breaking my tank. I'm really worried about my life-stock though. I've invested a lot of money into it for all it of to be destroyed or eaten. I'm starting to dislike the people at this reef store more and more each day.

It could still scratch it bad.

ive been going to nemos for years. simon and alan is very knowledgeable with different kinds of fish and other species. thats the reason why i go there.

I don't think we should bash any sponsor's on here.Let's keep to the getting the octopus out of your tank.

In Before The Lock -

Negative comments about a sponsor without resolving thru PM, in person, or phone call to the Sponsor and or BOD could get a thread closed or locked..

Sorry about that guys, still new to the forum so I didn't know and I let my anger get the best of me <--- (Roughneck infantry for 3 years) so those of you that know, understand we like take bs. But I was planning to calling them yesterday to see what kind of octopus it was but never had a chance. I'll give them a call today and let you guys know what kind it is.

I would be frustrated in your position also. I can't imagine having an established reef tank with fish and corals, to include SPS, and then an Octopus moving in to my surprise. Even if it does not eat fish and inverts, it could damage corals and rearrange rocks easily.

I would enlist a helping hand or two and carefully find a way to safely remove the Octopus from your reef and then take it back to the store where you got it. I would look for a full refund and I am sure you will find an ARC sponsor store very easy to work with.

I would also put your brother on lock down and maybe help him setup a separate predator or dedicated species tank he can mess with without harming your reef - maybe you can enjoy that too and protect your investment in your reef at the same time.

I thought Octo's needed a lower temp than we keep our reefs?

get with dwhately - he/she keeps cephlapods and may be able to help answer some questions.

I would put some food in a fish trap or if its a really small guy and you dont have a trap try a glass bottle - downside to the glass bottle is you have to keep an eye on it as it could get out of it fairly easily..

I started reading an article on them and I also ran across the fact that they need lower temps. My display is at 78 degrees throughout the day so I dunno how well he'll take the heat.

i would feel the same way if someone put a shark in my reef. not understanding or knowing what might happen would piss me off as well. best of luck to you bud

I can't really blame it on my brother. He doesn't know anything about reef keeping so he just buy's whatever he thinks is cool. I tell him to pass everything he buys through me before he buys it and he did with the black and white clowns, but he forgot to mention the octopus.

I just got off the phone with the LFS and he guy was pretty helpful. He looked up the name of the octopus for me and its called a Briareus Octopus. He told me he got it from a guy that has an even bigger one in his reef tank and it was reef safe but what my brother forgot to mention to him was that I also have a cleaning crew of snails, crab and CLEANER SHRIMP!! You guys know how expensive cleaner shrimp can be. The guy at the LFS also agreed with me that my cleaning crew could be in danger and offered a refund if I can catch it. So I gotta find a trap and will be able to catch this sucker. If you guys have any ideas of how to do things please let me know.

If my brother really likes the thing than I guess if I'm able to catch him than I can throw him in the sump where I have my life rock and sand.

Thanks for understanding dawgdude. I've just borrowed a trap from MY LFS so I can try and catch this sucker. I've had someone at home monitor my fish and coral all day to make sure nothing get eaten. I guess its a live and learn thing. My brother has his LFS and I have mine own. This is just to better reasure me that I went with the right one. At least Allen at atlanta reef understands my tank because he's been there to supply me with everything I needed from day one and ever since I started reef keeping. So he has a really good understanding of what I have in my tank and what my tank is capible of housing. I can't blame my brother because he doesn't know any better and I can't fully blame the store he went to because they don't know what kind of set up I have. But for them to state that its safe to have the octopus live with my coral and fish, I don't fully agree after doing my research once I've found out what type of octopus it was.

I also gave my brother an ear full as well so he'll make sure to pass EVERYTHING through me before buying.
