Odd skimmer depth observation... SRO3000INT

I recently changed the water depth of my sro3000 internal skimmer from 5.5in to 6.25inch deep and after a week of skimming it seems apparent that it skimmed better at the shallower 5.5in depth. So contrary to the recommended "better" depth range usually recommended for this skimmer (6-7") my old 5.5in depth works better. Any thoughts as to why this would be the case and has anyone else found a shallower depth to be better for these skimmers?

Oh, and for what it's worth I have my skimmer taking in air from outside and the additional length of air line is about 24" worth and is a size larger (fitting over the existing airline tube that came on the skimmer); with that said I have found no air restrictions over when it was pulling inside air and it has been setup with an outside line for several months.

Thanks

Oh and before and after the change in skimmer depth no other changes have been made on the tank.

When you changed the water depth did you adjust your skimmer for that change? If not you will definitely have different skim results.

Ya I did.

I'm pulling the same amount of wet skim but it's weak and light colored now where it was super dark nasty before.

The amount of air being drawn in could have changed due to the increased head pressure of the additional water depth/height there by slowing the pump down. Even though minute, a needle wheel pump is drastically affected by a small head pressure change. Just a theory.:)

I own the same model skimmer, cone shape, when I had it working I never try to pull the line outside, as some guys recommend over in some forums and YouTube, reason was that the air outside could be exposure to chemicals to treatment the yard, another reason was the difference on temperatures greatly affect the production of foam in the skimmer, plus the head of pulling the air like groupertherapy said. I ran my skimmer stable at around 6 inch and I had lots of dark skimmate even so I had no corals and small bioload. Oh, something else that I dif was just to cover the air intake with some cotton pads. Helps filtering the air
