They are called 'butter bars' because they wear a single gold bar as a sign of their rank, which is either a 2nd Lieutenant or an Ensign (in the Navy).

The 'butter' part is in reference to the gold color of their bar.

I wanted to go to WO school so bad! never made it that far. Who knows maybe one day I will rejoin

It sucks because I was about to board for MAJ before I left, but I couldn't take it anymore. I couldn't deal with all the admin crap that comes with the higher ranks, too many politics/opinions involved. I was in the Reserves at the time...that was the biggest mistake I ever made, trying to transition from active duty. Talk about lazy...

The military is a great place to get training. My advice is to take everything that you can.

Where else will you get paid, housed and fed to get trained? Then have a guaranty to be able to apply it?

When you get out, employers like to hire you because they know the above, plus that you have some discipline.
