OK so while admiring my tank noticed several clear whitish tentacles coming out of the sand.. . Creepy and scary. What the heck is it? I tried raking through the sand to find it, but no luck

Pretty harmless. I would leave it where it is. If you don't like it being in there, you could wait till lights on and see if you see it cruising around somewhere and vacuum it out.

Like this? they come in white tentacles and black body, too! (I had one of those, too)

After pulling out a nasty fireworm (no, not an average bristle worm, a true fireworm) I was a little more cautious :)

Edit: Just look at the bristles on this guy!

Wouldn't want to get hit by those.

Just don't pet the bristleworms ;)

Most worms are good to have.

If yours just pokes out of the sand, don't go digging for it.

Not to my knowledge - at least not enough to bite you. It's the bristles that get into the skin and irritate. If you get bristled, soak your fingers in some vinegar and it will melt them off.

Feels mostly like splinters, or that itchy feeling when you mess with fiberglass batting insulation.

Fireworms pack a burn along with the bristles.

For most people the reaction is local, and temporary. Benedryl will help. If you have allergies to stings and such, might be prudent to do whatever you would normally do if you have a reaction (ie Epi pen, etc.)
