Ok so now is it time for LED's

I am putting my 4 light t5"s back on today along with the MM LED's that I despise. I have never seen my corals look worse, even when I had the dreaded diatom attack!!:mad2: Anyone know if there is a return policy on them? Bubba

This is all I have to say about this topic:

That's what I did with my AI's

I considered it: creative problem solving.

Don't have any fancy words or scientific facts. Just my experience and observations.
But, to use an analogy-

Using LEDs is like dove hunting with a .22 rifle. Can you kill your prey just as dead as you would with a shotgun loaded with birdshot? Absolutely. But, your odds of a kill are much lower and difficult to achieve.

What are all the reasons behind success/failure rates with LEDs? Dunno. Probably the huge number of variables LED presents. How many B/RB/W in what ratios and wattages? Cree vs Bridgelux. Dimmed and if so, what %.
So many fewer variables with a test group of people using MH.
It just is what it is.

Dang , looks like i re-opened a hornets nest on this topic!! Sorry I didn't mean to reopen the wounds? lol , this is a topic for all, as Seth said , its a hit and miss deal. I totally agree. For now , i think i will just add some led strips to supplement my MH's as Snowman suggested. If it works and its NOT broken then no need to fix it. just supplement it until the smoke clears. I would like to sit with Seth and drink his wine while he gives me a lecture on LED's , and also have Snowman play a tune at the same time. You guys are great.
BTW> only reason I'm supplementing the halides is to satisfy the wife with color for her corals. If she's happy , I'm happy

Jeff's tank is not a SPS dominated tank either while he does have some he has a lot of lps as well . I'm sure his husbandry habits are dead on as well. I will not say any thing bad about LEDs since I never gave then a chance. I prefer my MH at this time. The only advantage I see that they have so far is the less heat produced.

his acrylic tank is 4ft x 32" x 22" tall, boy is this topic totally confusing???

Absolutely no offense to Hogsnapper but he has only had his tank setup for a few months...+/- 6. But your right, good looking tank!

my tank is sps dominated, about 90% of my stock is acros and theyre colored incredible.i have a diy,108 3w cree,72 royal blue,24 whites and 12 high noons.all controlled and dimmed individually over my 120g.the leds have been over my reef since january and it took some adjustments from my corals from t5 but theyve never looked better now.where my tank is located,mh was not an option nor was a chiller.my house is small and the tank is located in the living area so we could not deal with all the heat without getting really creative.another BIG aspect of me going leds is all the space left in the canopy to work over my reef.no big bulky reflectors or anything else in my way.unobstructed access to everthing.
its hard to beat mh and maybe leds arent for everyone but theyre sure working for me!
