OOOPPSSS! Heater explosion.

Well, I guess "explosion" is a little misleading...

Don't forget to turn off your heater when you drain your sump. I did and when I went to replace the water my heater glass busted.

Doh!!! You are not the first, and will not be the last. At least you identified the issue quickly before damage was done.

I had one explode a long time ago, there was very loud popping sounds that I heard from the next room over, smoke coming off the water, and a nasty burnt seawater smell.

I realized it before I had finished dumping the first gallon of water into it. I quickly unplugged it and took the electrical piece out of the water. Then I had to fish the remaining pieces of glass out.

I had just picked up a heater for my mixing station. Guess I need to go pick up another.

This may sound crazy but my heater did not fit in my sump very well so I put it in the overflow. I have not regretted it, I do plan to put a smaller one in the sump as a back up though.

That's actually not that crazy. I had a HoB filter ( tetra I think) that had a heater specifically made to fit in the tube that sucked water into filter. I never had any issues with water temperature.
