I actually misspoke , 2x6 and up meet codes in certain openings and possibly the one Dave is framing. But the opening size is not the only factor actually there are many more. In most scenarios of openings up to 6' span a #2 yellow pine 2x10 meets code for nearly all factors. It is common practice here to just use 2x10 in all the opening 6' or under and insure code compliance.
