Opinions wanted....

I would never touch MH or T5 ever again.
For me, the low heat, low energy consumption, and the fact that you dont have to replace bulbs regularly are enough reason to use LEDs. Leds aren't really a "new" technology per say.. People have been using them for years on their reef systems and their corals are thriving.

You can do a DIY for under/around $200 for a tank that size and keep whatever corals you'd like. Or you can find used fixtures for a good price.

The question you need to ask yourself is - do I want to spend money on new bulbs every 6 months?

Go led or go broke.

Sharkbait;855836 wrote: I'm going to have to disagree with you as well. What advances in the MH or T5 realm has happened recently? All of the focus on lighting right now is in the LED field. Hence phasing out as manufactures are starting to try and invest more in the newer technology instead of progressing MH's and T5's as LEDs have been proven to get the same results with less heat, less energy costs and less up keep costs.

LED's are terrible with SPS growth, I know you left the hobby for a few years, and during that time, LED has performed terrible, but looked great! HAHAHA!

Good Luck!

we have very similar reefing methods and i usually agree with most of your posts but im gonna whole heartedly disagree with this one.maybe the lesser quality leds wont grow or color sps well but with high quality equipment and the proper spectrums, leds will grow sps just as well as any mh or t5 out there.my acros explode with color and growth and ive been led for nearly 2 years.

that's great! nice to hear a success story, unfortunately, they are "few and far between" when it comes to SPS at this point. I hope I'm wrong, and maybe I am........
I did hear a rumor that Dave went back to 400 watt MH due to crappy growth with his "best of the best" LED's. I guess I should PM BEFORE I post this, lol......

i believe you are correct, but then again,i wouldnt necessarily call radions the best of the best[maybe the most expensive].you can build a diy fixture that far exceeds any factory unit from any company with higher quality components with the best bins possible.

Nothing beats MH, i have a 29 gallon with a 150w MH over top. Love it, grow whatever i want. I havnt seen any LEDs that can keep SPS Color or growth.

then youve never looked at my threads :)
sorry,cipps

I would suggest anyone who doubts LEDs to read this article. Even you Ralph.
