Need some help before my wife goes insane. I just finished plumbing my aqueon 220 with durso overflows. The overflows themselves are quiet but my good lord the water/air noise in the drain lines and into the sump are louder than ive ever heard. Systems got gate valves on it. Stayed up until 3 am trying to adjust them to try and knock some sound out of them. Anyone have any tips? The drain chamber in the sump is just slap full of bubbles. I can open it wide open and it helps a good bit but then the overflows start gurgling.

Any chance of plumbing it for a Herbie overflow (or Bean Animal)? Those will be silent. A Durso is always going to have some noise.

That said, I hope someone with experience will have some advice for how to make it quieter. The only things I can think of are:
  1. Don't have any horizontal runs in your drain pipe(s). I imagine air will get caught in them and not get pushed out the top of the drain.
  2. Reduce your return flow. I imagine that faster flow will make more noise, and a low 1X turnover every hour is totally fine for most situations.
I've never tried to quiet a Durso, though, so I may be wrong/partially wrong on those.

Reducing the flow rate would be the best way to lower the noise.

You can also try to make the air hole on the top bigger. If necessary, you can add vinyl tube and make a silencer to it as well. Thats old way we did.

Replying to multiple people in one lol @york1 unfortunately not enough room for a reverse. That was my first idea.

@project1004 turned the flow rate down and drilled the holes out a bit more and no luck.

I packed the chamber with filter pads and some luck. But not much.

We left for about 4 hours for a Christmas thing. Come home and the tank is dead silent. Im at a loss, maybe it just needed more break in time. But for now in the spirit of Christmas we hope to have a silent night 🤷‍♂️
