what is the purpose of this tube sticking outta my overflow and can i make it shorter?

Havn't seen them like that before but my first guess is a vent tube for better flow. If it is, shorter should be ok.

vent tube.. (keeps it from having that buildup and loud gurgling noise (caused by an air pocket within the flow of water in the drain)..

you have them in your house too, they're just in the walls..

also breaks siphon...

It would be tough to back siphon from an overflow hose leading to a sump. The siphon break is done on the input to the DT from the sump.

I'm looking at it such as a vent pipe on a house for commodes.

top must be higher than water level i would not cut it down if it is lower than water level possibility of leaking

how deep should that tube go into the PVC? i have it going just above the end of the black part and the start of the white pvc

i used hard tube on mine and i just pushed it down until it was quiet i think it goes down about 8 to 10'' inside the drain line

vent stacks are in place to prevent a siphon..

any time you have a fluid in a tube moving from a higher location to a lower location you have the potential for a siphon to be created.. it's just as common on overflows as it is on return lines..

they are the exact same

It's best to try different lengths from my experience. It does make a huge difference in noise levels and even the aeration of the overflow water as it dumps in to the sump. I was able to turn a loud gurgling, slpashing flow to a smooth and quiet flow by just using an inch longer tube.

And prevent air pockets that disrupt water flow. I guess it works kind of like an aerator on your sink...different approach but same result. Same as a vent on a gas can, Miller beer can(I think it's miller), and so on...probably bad examples but same concept I suppose. :lol2:

it allows air to be sucked in there, so it doesnt get sucked in through the bulkhead(making a slurping noise)

get the system running and then adjust it up and down till you get things quiet, then just cut the extra off the top if you want to. But keep it above the water level.

no, but because of the fact that there isn't a vent.. it could turn into a siphon.. (which will manifest itself in a surge/gurgle in the overflow box)
