i also heard most palys have "specks" on them when closed..

from what I understand. Palys get there specs from absorbing the sand into their tissue. most true palys bud as zoas for the most part mat. The palys also from what I understand have different toxins that are more irritating when fragging.

what do you mean by bud and mat? i mean i get the mat but what does budding mean in paly?

Zoanthids and Palythoa are two different animals.
The statement above is like saying all dogs are born as cats and then change.
The shape of the mouth is the only easy way to tell them apart - the rest is science stuff...
