I have been reading on using Peek Driveway Heat for Calcium Chloride. I think it can be used as a good calcium supplement. I haven't read any negatives yet what do you all think?

Is Kent Marine turbo-calcium that expensive? Why risk the health of your investment to save a couple bucks?

Then again, people do use epsom salts as a Mg source.

It was just something I read. I was wondering if it was true? Also you can use Mrs wages pickling lime for Kalk 1lb for 2.99. Can't beat that!!!

Do you have a link on the Peek?

(I use the Mrs. Wages for my kalk topoff)

The people in the second thread really seem to like it. Just trying to give some other alternatives for supplements.

I believe Simon has done some testing using pure Calcium Chloride in his tank... I think he would be a good resource for comments on this topic.

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php">Here is a more informative link</a> on the use of Calcium Chlorides by Randy Holmes-Farley (a reef chemistry expert for those that aren't familiar with the name). It's been a practice for some time now but has a few dangers (DO NOT touch it with your bare hands for one). Make sure that you are comfortable with making measurements and calculations before you put your entire tank at risk... otherwise its an extremely effective way to regulate Ca+ levels.

...and here I thought you guys were asking for help on how to avoid having your driveway get iced up tomorrow morning.

The only down side is that it's not a chemical to be treated as casually as you can treat all the other common supplements for reefs. Unless you use Kent Turbo Stronium (or Kent Turbo calcium which is Calcium Chloride). Calcium Chloride is very exothermic and can cause burns quite easily.

Naturally, anything that concentrated is not forgiving of imprecise measurements or dosing.

I don't know about the more concentrated versions of Dowflake, but as someone who has actually used the stuff for a couple years I can tell you it didn't burn me. I believe it isn't any more irritating than concentrated Kalkwasser. Not that I am suggesting you should run out and try it. Whenever I work with chemicals, I always use latex gloves, but I have gotten that stuff on me numerous times.

You can get prepackaged versions at

Hell yes!!!! it's expensive....$20 for that little jar.

I paid $25 for like 25 POUNDS of the calcium.....just because it's at the LFS, doen't mean its the only way to go....there are better alternatives out there if you are willing to do the research and been a front runner in the the aquarium hobby.....

I am going to disagree with you.....

There are better things out there, and the stuff I use has Strontium, Magnesium, Calcium. etc.....all the stuff you need for a reef tank.....

Don't be brainwashed by LFS's, I also never measured in my life....I take a "handful" of Ca and drop in my sump every other day....

Always measures out to be in the 490 to 520 range on my Ca.

Got a brand name on the stuff you buy? I like the idea of a bulk 1 part solution.

I agree with Todd, I've been using some sort of calcium chloride for calcium supp for over a year now and things are doing really well in my tank, I also use epsom salts for Mg supp. hmm and I also use baking soda for my alk supp. Actually cant remember last time I've bought chemicles from a store. Oh yeah and I use Mrs Wadges for kalk drip.

Is it pool seasons Calcium Hardness Increaser. That's all I could find on the net.
