Petco dollar per gallon

So if your just going to drill the sides for a sump/refugium/breeding tank then you should be all good to go with these Tetra brand tanks. But if you were looking for a tank upgrade and planned on drilling the bottom of the tank then it is a no go.

My heart sank when I started reading this thread as I just picked one up with a 20 long for a sump.
You post made me feel more better.

The thing to do is find something that IS tempered to verify your test. The lids to cooking pots usually are.
That way you can be sure if all the components, and be sure of the results.

yea repeated the test on a tank that i knew was tempered and got almsot the same results so either the iphone 5s dosent use a polarizing filter or the method does not work. im still looking for a different way to test. ive read that you can look at the glass at a sharp angle and see distortions in it but havent confirmed this yet

don't they have a slip if paper or sticker tucked under the bottom trim that says "tempered glass, do not drill"?

no the tetra one doesn't but someone said they called tetra and said that the bottoms are tempered

yea im hoping that they dont anymore cause if i drill it and it shatters i doubt petco will give me my money back on it after that lol

I spoke with tetra today and the bottom is for sure tempered... the sides vary from model to model. They give me the glass manufactures number I'll call Monday to verify

The lady said she didn't believe they were tempered on the sides. I did notice this though on Tetra 55 gallon standard vs 40 breeder. In the store the 40 had a sticker saying tempered do not drill on the bottom. The 55 said tempered glass on all panes do not drill. Seems to me they would use the same sticker on the 40 if it were the case but then again they could be manufactured at different places.

yea i just worry about that sort of thing because mine didnt have a sticker anywhere on it. i still considering taking it back and getting one that i know is not tempered on any pane

Considering how often we upgrade tanks (ideally not often), and the cost of the actual tank itself vs. the amount of $ we dump into a system, I see no reason why you shouldn't get the exact tank you want. I'd even recommend looking into other 36x18 tanks, like a drilled 65. I usually buy used to save $. upgrading to a 40 breeder is not the only size option for that footprint

i thought about the 65 but im just not a fan of the extra height. i hate having to get my armpit wet when i want to work on things close to the bottom or on the sand bed which is why i chose the 40 plus i like that its not too much wider than my current tank but i get an extra 6 inches of depth so my fish will have more room to swim

Might have some luck finding one that's never seen water from last years $1/gallon sales with a wtb ad

What is your current tank again? 36x18x12?

30x12x12 i believe. its a 20 long

Edit: but like you said earlier with as money as we spend on these tanks i might as well just spend the extra 60 bucks and get the aqueon 40 breeder

JUST DRILL IT ALREADY! ;-)

Tell you what, if you find out the side is tempered, I've got a sheet of 1/4 glass that you is non tempered and I know you can drill. I 'll give it to you and you can show off some of that fancy silicone work that you are famous for!

I'm about to get a 40b and drill it tempered or not that thing is getting drilled lol. Not even worth it if you can't drill them. Let me know what you guys find out

Kind of funny, the whole time I had a 40 breeder set up (undrilled) I had another one sitting in the garage with 3 holes for 1" bulkheads on the bottom and a center overflow box.

Which someone gave me for free (the drilled tank)

If I could look into the future I would have left it sitting there for you B, but you might be able to track it down!
