Ok, so we all know how a few Petco's have saltwater fish. We also know that it's a risk, but with some proper QT procedures, these guys have some great deals on cool fish occasionally. Especially if you find out what day of the week they get fish.

That being said, I have no clue anymore which Petco's actually have a saltwater section in the Atlanta area.

Anybody want to chime in on the few that still have a selection?

I don't know if all stores that have an Aquatics department have a saltwater selection or not. If you search for stores on their site you can filter them by Services.

The Store on Pleasant Hill in Duluth has a saltwater section, but that's so close to Atlanta Aquarium...

Both the ones in Kennesaw do, the one by galleria does, and the one on Caroline st in Atlanta used to have a dedicated frag tank. I haven't been there in several years, so not sure if it's still there...

Pretty sure they will ship from Liveaquaria. Petco, Dr's F&S & Liveaquaria are all owned by Petco.

I did not know that.

I've never trusted Petco fish, but sometimes you go in there and you see something that you just can't pass up for 75% less than your LFS. When I see a $115 fish for $21.99, throw it in the QT and hope for the best.

The manager of Petco at duluth told me that their petco does more saltwater sales than every other petco in the country other than one in nyc. Seems odd to me considering Rit's place is around the corner...

she's comparing to other petco's that usually have limited availability when it comes to saltwater stuffs. i think in GA, the duluth petco has the most stuffs follow by the one at Edgewood. they also do special orders, both freshwater and saltwater. so i can see how she can claim what she claimed.

I buy my real cheap filter stuff there. I was in the store once when a fish shipment came in. It was crazy, you'd have thought they were giving something way. Reminded me of when ammo was in short supply. People were lining the isles in Bass Pro and Walmart during restocking to grab it up as it was put on the shelves.

The Petco in Marietta on Johnson Ferry RD has saltwater fish, inverts & other salt water stuff.

The fish dept manager or the store manager? I wonder if you can avoid their shipping costs that way. They have a great catalog online, and the prices are fantastic, until you add $30 shipping.

Petco in Buford is about to have their list opened up for what they can order. Depending on the sales of each store, they are eligible to enter a program called “magnet” which the Buford location is almost finished with. I believe they will have a frag tank soon.

Also, it does not surprise me that the Duluth store does well around the corner from Rit. People probably shop the area more because there’s a variety of places to go. I would be curious to know how he himself feels about it, maybe I should give him a call and ask!

By th way, if any moderators happen to be browsing and wouldn’t mind unlocking my old account and resetting my password for me, it’s JDavid. Thanks in advance

The original store in Kennesaw on Barrett by Publix doesn't have saltwater anymore. They barely have fish at all. The new one next to Whole Foods does have saltwater, as does the one in Acworth.

After seeing what the Duluth Petco had, I keep checking these two store hopefully but am disappointed every time. Last time I was in either (maybe two months ago?) they “had” saltwater, but it was a REALLY thin selection and I didn’t like the look of the maintenance at either (one had a nifty bloom of red cyno.)

I first stopped in to the Duluth Petco to pick up something for the dogs after a visit to Atlanta Aquarium, and was pleasantly shocked at how much stock they had, including a frag tank. I decided to take a chance on an “unidentified” fairy wrasse for $20 and a nice little feather duster for $10. QT’d the wrasse for 2 weeks, nice and healthy, added to the tank no problems).

That said, I think you want to really be able to do your own fish identification and/or be able to verify with an app or web search what you are looking at. I noticed a more than few fish that didn’t quite match what I expected given the tank label. Petco guy helping me WAS knowledgeable, but said that occasionally the shipment comes in when a salt specialist isn’t in and they don’t always get labeled correctly.

That can either make for a nice deal OR you can end up taking home a very lovely fairy wrasse that turns out to be possibly one of the most aggressive fairy varieties and will probably preclude any other wrasses as he is a totally bully. (Redfin Fairy Wrasse as idenfied by the wrasse experts on the wrasse ID thread on Reef2Reef - and they are the once that advised against any other wrasses)
