Petco's that have saltwater fish?

I know what fish I order at petco, and the problem IS the less knowledgeable/trained associates “helping out” that causes a lot of the problems. I had someone come over and place a very small tomini tang with a larger one. Didn’t end up well. Also found two six lines buried in the sand in my tank with all my asters snail and some blue legs and a cleaner shrimp. Luckily, I caught that one pretty quickly one I noticed they were no longer floating in their bags. I have managerial responsibilities outside of the aquatics department, although I AM the saltwater and freshwater aquatics manager (and all other small animals and reptiles) and I am the store’s expert. I need time to turn a few things around, but I hope to be able to help anyone out. I also refer people to the local LFS ALL THE TIME (wont say who quite yet ;))

I’m just out to feed myself guys. I’m back here because yes I will need to be able to pick your brains and be the best caregiver to these animals that I can be- and I’ll take any complaints you have for any petco. If it’s in the area, maybe I can reach out and solve a problem. Once upon a time I gave my passion to this hobby/industry and very much to this club! ita going to take me a long time to increase sales enough to open up my list of what I can order. If this breaks any rules mods remove, but again, I refer customers to sponsor LFS all the time and sponsors, if you don’t like petco, make me an offer to come work for you! Because I like getting my hands wet at work.

Are you at the Duluth Petco? Because if you are, hats off to you. I didn’t mean my post as a slam of Duluth. I was super impressed by the store and the staff that helped me. I just meant that, as you stated, sometimes the less knowledgeable staff “help out” so as consumers, we have to be a bit more on top of it and aware when we are buying in case we get there before you or another salt specialist catch things like the two Tomini tangs in the same tank. “Hey! maybe that new little guy would feel better and safer if we put him with a bigger buddy of his own kind to watch out for him”

BTW, here’s a picture of my bargain fairy wrasse. Butthead that he is, must say he’s growing into quite the looker.EA129F02-4E00-4F16-8A77-169E3D972FB1.jpegF7525A88-76AA-460E-8DAE-B9D41C65155E.jpeg

Nice! I’m not at Duluth- Duluth is a “magnet” store meaning they are fully opened up for saltwater. I can’t get the stuff they can, but then again, Rit is right around the corner and that’s where I did the vast majority of my shopping for both the hobby and also my maintenance business back in the day. The expert there is Nikki and she’s great- so is Marley at the mall of ga, soon to be fully opened up
For saltwater. All great people- along with Rit, Simon, Aaron and all the store owners in the area. One person might not have a product that’s needed right away, we’re all here to help and I don’t need business referred to me because I get paid the same amount either way, but I won’t turn it down. Just saying. LFS has to survive too if you want that specialized kind of expert help and availability.

! Not that they were having any trouble last time I checked, I think, or at least hope business is booming!

By the way, if any moderators happen to be browsing and wouldn’t mind unlocking my old account and resetting my password for me, it’s JDavid. Thanks in advance

I just updated the email address for @jdavid to the one used for this acct and sent a password reset. In the process I had to alter this acct's address. Once you get in to the old acct please PM me and I'll delete this acct and merge it with the original.

Sorry having problems I will figure it out later and stop posting after this until then. Just felt like an update is needed here. There was no hope for me running a decent aquatics department in petco. The company is not a good company and the system is designed to break you! They are seriously cruel to animals- an example is that a manager told me to refuse guinea pigs from sunpet and did it right in front of me because of non-existent upper respiratory infections.. I asked the guy right in front of her if they get re-sold and he shook his head no. Later that day she told me she “didn’t really care about animals”... and this is the person I had to pry information out of to try to do my job. I quit at 8 am this morning and I was waiting for my fav LFS to open at 11. Spend a few extra bucks if you have to, folks. Petco is a terrible company. Shop at Atlanta Aquarium! (Or whichever LFS employs me the soonest please )

For me, Petco is only for cheap HOB filter stuff and the very occasional $ per gallon sale tank. I've never bought anything alive from them. I have thought about getting a LA fish from them to avoid the freight but I never have. I've stuck with Rit or Simon.

If you still can't get in with the other acct PM me and we'll set a temp password that you can reset after you get in.

It doesn’t matter, I can just use this one. You know, this could at least be edited to say that I was treasurer for my first year. A lot of people didn’t stick around for the second year.. and mine was a particularly tough one! I like Holley, but come on! :(

Sorry secretary.. want to edit posts! Give me a job lol. Everybody just give me a job. I want to play with fish. And someone sell me a tank too! PM me will make a wtb thread if that’s still a section

Interesting to know that about the Petco near Rit, didn't realize that! I think the important thing is watching the specimen and then QT QT QT :)

OK, so I finally made it down to the Duluth Petco. It is a smaller section for saltwater but talk about a variety of stock. Pricing was excellent. I was a kid in a candy shop but luckily my tank build is still in the fish room stage, so I had to refrain from loading up a cart full of problems.

So, when you all are referring to "Rit's store" do you mean Atlanta Aquarium down the street from there?

yes. that's the one. next to Iron Age.

that Petco is a hit-and-miss sometimes. i know a member who scored a purple tang for $70 that was loaded with ich. but with proper care/QT, it recovered.

They had some impressive tangs. Some incredible pipe fish. What impressed me most was their stock of what I call "extra small". I like all the normal stock but I have always preferred buying my fish as small as I can get. These guys had a lot to chose from.

With the recent changes in all that Petco owns, I do wonder how easy it would be to order pretty much anything, at these low prices, and just pick it up from the store same day it arrives.

The petco on duluth offers special order and then you can tell them that you want to pick up on the day of delivery to avoid anything bad in their tank water getting latched onto your fish.

However that’s a crap shoot at best because you can’t really see the condition of the fish through the black plastic bag. I did order through them at one time and in the method I mentioned above. Well, that fish had something and died shortly after (within 24-48hrs)

What is their return/refund policy in those cases? I think all fish can be a crap shoot but I respect those who stand behind their stock for the first few days, at least.

They do get some interesting critters in. I once got a mexican palenose eel from them... I've been looking for another ever but to no avail... Can't find it anywhere online either.
