I purchase a phosban reactor with phosban media. It recommends 1 gram per gallon (i.e. a 150 grams does a 150 gallons) . Should I start out slowly and add more every couple of weeks. I have a 120 gallon tank. Maybe 40-50 grams to start out with.

Depends a bit on the water parameters and what media you are using, but I would stick with the manufacturer's recommendations. For example, if your PO4 is really high and you are using Phosban, you will likely exhaust it in a couple of days on the first use. IME, a good GFO lasts quite a bit longer.

If PO4 is even less, leave the media in place. If PO4 plateaued at an elevated level, replace it and start over at step 2.

a. PO4 should get down to acceptable range and not require replacing media very often.

FWIW, i had a pretty bad hair algae bloom about 3 months ago. I used Rowaphos at the recommended dosage right from the start and i didn't notice any adverse affects.

Well it shows 0, but cheap test kit (API). The only reason I am running phosban is I set this tank up bc my other became overgrown with HA. I am going to run it as a prevention. I know more WC, less feeding and less photo time. Believe me I practice that, but I spent a bunch of $$ on this set up and I want it right.

I tried that in the old setup. This one is algea free and I am doing everything I can to keep it that way.
