The initial culture came from a reefer in San Francisco about 14 months ago in 2 water bottles. It was a door prize at some reef meeting while out there on a business trip.
I know 3 people including myself that have tried with DT's and it doesn't seem to take. By the time it gets to the store and into your hands, it's not really as "alive" as it needs to be for actual growing.
Florida Aqua Farms sells cultures for cheap and they're close enough that standard UPS ground is "overnight" so shipping is cheap, too.
