so what creates a population of pineapples sponges? I tank is 4 months old,and all params are good. I was using publix r o water, but I switched about 3 weeks ago to lfs h2o. newbie mistake, was that the problem

i don't think they are a bad thing by any means. when I started my 55 gal years ago I got a few and over the years they have dissapeared. I wouldn't worry about them. I'd actually say its probably a good thing

They are not a problem, and be careful of lfs h2o as well they may not change filters as much as Publix does. (monthly)

My tank is about 5 months old and starting to get lots of pineapple sponges too. I use 0 TDS RODI water and still get them and from what I know they are a good thing. Just noticed that the inside of my overflow is full of them too.

Most Sponges are filter feeders sum are photosynthetic they are all good for the tank they are natures watter filters. usuly wen you have a large population of sponge there is a lot of dissolved solids in the water colum usuly from over feeding corals and fish. if your corals are fine and have good color I would not worry about it
If you don't like the look of the sponges you can lower feeding do more wc or go ulns sucking them out works some time but it only takes 1 cell for a sponge to re grow so there is a high chance if there is a food source it will come back

thanks for the information, I'm only concerned with publix r o water because it's not d I. does anybody else use publix or walmart water? when I called the number on the machine they said they allow up to 50 tds , but I'm not even sure if he knew he was talking about.

I used Publix water up to a month ago when I bought my RO/DI. I had no problem with it. Would recommend to anyone.

I think those water dispensing machines are hit or miss. The ones that are regularly maintained provide water that I would not hesitate to use in my tank.

As far as the sponges go, harmless filter feeders as falos said. Their popluations tend to wax and wane as nuttient levels change in your tank.

I had pineapple sponges and they went away. i have lots of different sponge species now, including a pretty rose colored one, but it doesn't seem to build a "body"
