Is anyone using a plenum?

I am reading GARF.org's Bullet Proof Reef directions.

Plemuns for denitrification were real popular back in the mid 1990s (do a google under "Jaubert Plenum". I used one on a 20 Long reef I had set up in 1995-1996 and it works for a while, but has a limited life expectancy as the crushed coral substrate solidifies and flow thru the plenum gets slower. I believe it would be OK for smaller systems where it is less of a chore to remove the rock/corals/fish and redo the sand bed every couple years, but not a great thing for larger systems, IMO.

Some people also set up remote plenums, a la refugiums, which would make maintenance easier.

I have one and have used them for about 11 years now. Mine is under my fuge though.

I had a friend that ran one on his 90 for 10years before moving up here to work at GAI. The thing was freaking bullet proof, but just like anything it must be set up properly.
