Plemuns for denitrification were real popular back in the mid 1990s (do a google under "Jaubert Plenum". I used one on a 20 Long reef I had set up in 1995-1996 and it works for a while, but has a limited life expectancy as the crushed coral substrate solidifies and flow thru the plenum gets slower. I believe it would be OK for smaller systems where it is less of a chore to remove the rock/corals/fish and redo the sand bed every couple years, but not a great thing for larger systems, IMO.
Some people also set up remote plenums, a la refugiums, which would make maintenance easier.
