Plumbing a 40 B

Just acquired a 40 breeder with 3 holes drilled in the bottom and an overflow box

The box is in the center of the back.

It looks like this-

How do I plumb this style of overflow/return?

Durso downpipe and 2 returns. Or 2 downpipes and 1 return

That's simple enough. Two downpipes seems like a better idea. Should I do a durso style above a full syphon or one like this

I thought the holes had to be drilled on the back of the tank to do a BA

So I'm probably going to do the herbie with two downpipes and one return.
The tank has holes drilled for 1" bulkheads, which I am going to place an order for later today from BRS ($21 including shipping, not bad for 3 bulkheads right?) if nobody has them laying around and responds to my WTB thread.

So I gather that the standpipe for a 1" bulkhead needs to be larger than 1" PVC with an adapter at the bottom or it won't perform properly? Why is this? The emergency drain can be 1" though, correct?

Are herbie's silent? Would you do dual durso overflows instead?

The herbie seems easier to build.

Okay. Please review my plan before I place an order for these items. Still debating slip or threaded. with threaded you can take it apart, but it could leak.

Viewing the tank from the back holes would be 1-2-3 from left to right

Hole 1- emergency drain
1" pvc from water level in overflow box -&gt; 1" bulkhead -&gt;1" vinyl tube adapter-&gt;1" black vinyl tube -&gt; sump

Hole 2- return. loc line &lt;- 1&quot; pvc &lt;- 1&quot; bulkhead &lt;- 1&quot; vinyl tube adapter &lt;- 1&quot; black vinyl tube &lt;- QuietOne 1200. Decided to go with this pump.

Hole 3- Full siphon. 6" Below emergency drain/water level in overflow. 1" Slip Strainer-&gt; 1" to 1 1/4" adapter -&gt; 1 1/4" -&gt; 1 1/4" PVC -&gt; 1 1/4" to 1" adapter -&gt; short 1" PVC (I guess) -&gt; 1" Bulkhead -&gt; 1" PVC -&gt; 1" ball valve -&gt; 1" vinyl tubing -&gt; sump

Some adapters would need to be added if I used threaded bulkheads and valve

I have never planned plumbing a tank before so if something is obviously wrong or if I'm making things too complicated please chime in

That will look good. I think the Herbie will be best for this application. However the bean animal has an added measure of flood prevention. I just think the Herbie will look better.

I have my 40B plumbed with a Herbie. It's pretty safe if you don't max out the siphon, that way you can be sure the emergency will handle the full flow. There's no need for 1000 GPH. Stick with 400 or less and it should be fine. The Herbie set up is quiet enough to be built into my son's loft bunkbed.

I don't think you need to step up to 1 1/4" plumbing on the siphon since you'll be restricting that anyway.

Get a gate valve instead of a ball valve because a ball valve is hard to fine tune. It wants to stick then jump too far when you are trying to adjust it. You'll probably have to order the gate valve.

Edit: If you do want to step up, consider stepping up your emergency drain. Lowes has 1" thread to 1 1/4" ID barb fittings and 1 1/4" tubing. If you go with 1" ID tubing, the barb fitting will actually pinch the opening down 1/8" or so, which will affect how much flow you can get in the event of an emergency.

I was going to try the true union ball valve, not the regular one. I can order a gate valve if necessary and use the true union as shutoff for cleaning or something

I think if it's a straight shot down with no elbows the 1" will handle the flow. The 1200 is only 296 GPH unrestricted so I'll be relying on a wp-25 for most of the flow

I plan on testing the emergency drain. I will upsize the tubing though. Good idea

Sounds pretty good, my 40b has a 1" bean animal, return is a quiet one 4000(not so quiet) with 1" vinyl tubing which wyes off to 2 3/4" over the back return pipes. It seems like adequate flow with 1 hydor 400 but I'm thinking about getting a wp25 for it as well.
